The Vatelins lead a peaceful life in Paris until Mr. Pontagnac, a friend of Mr. Vatelin, pursues Lucienne, his wife, to their home with the intention of wooing her. Discovering that she is a friend's wife, Mr. Pontagnac is all the more embarrassed when Mr. Vatelin, not vindictive, offers to invite his own wife to come and see the couple. The invitation, barely refused, is followed by the arrival of Mr. Pontagnac’s wife, who begins to doubt her husband’s fidelity.
