The political image of Hellenistic queens
Culture · Tuesday, November 3 · 18:00 · Bordeaux
85 cours du Maréchal Juin, 33000 Bordeaux
The Hellenistic queens, with the exception of Cleopatra, remain relatively little known. Yet their iconographies are telling; they consolidate the royal ideology. A female model of power and the legitimation of rulers and their heirs was transmitted to us by the successors of Alexander the Great. The influence of this model extends far beyond its time. From selected examples, we will discuss the forms and functions of these images and the mythical and political narrative they carry.
