The film is heavily inspired by the history and the people who worked there, notably Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway. Richard Gere delivers a brilliant lead performance. Despite difficulties with the producer during filming, Coppola delivered a touching feature. Including compositions by Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway, the film's score composed by John Barry won the Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album in 1986.
