Barney, Sylvia Beach… How lesbian and gay writers and artists helped shape the myth of a neighborhood, and wrote from Paris a page of 20th‑century American literature. In the interwar and postwar periods, these people wrote and/or published essays and novels that illuminate not only the experiences of sexual minorities but also racism, sexism, and repression in Western societies.
