Three characters find themselves at death in the same room. They are Garcin, a journalist; Inès, a Post Office clerk; and Estelle, a wealthy socialite. They do not know each other, come from very different backgrounds, and do not share the same beliefs or tastes. In this play, a secret, no-exit trial begins in which each of the three characters judges and is judged on the acts that make up their existence.
