The signature in the painting
Culture · Thursday, December 10 · 18:00 · Nantes
Musée d'arts de Nantes, 10 Rue Georges Clemenceau
From the Renaissance onwards, some artists signed their works with their first names. However, before the 19th century, this practice was rare. With the rise of the art market and the dispersion of aristocratic collections, the signature becomes an authenticity indicator. Symbol of the emergence of the singular artist, yet tied to artisanal traditions, the cursive signature spreads and contributes to the value of the work, as with Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres.
