Buoyed by the immense commercial success of milagrous medals inspired by the Apparition of the Virgin at Rue Du Bac in Paris in 1830, the 'patenôtriers-médaillistes' (makers of miraculous medals) broaden their productions by diversifying them. From the 1860s, more and more regional subjects are depicted on these medals intended for sale to pilgrims. These small objects of devotion have two functions: they mark the memory of visiting a pilgrimage site and they provide the support for prayers addressed to the saint depicted on the medal.
