Auguste Dejoie was born in Vertou in May 1862, from an old family settled for centuries in sud-Loire. A master mariner, Cape Horn captain, he sailed the oceans, sometimes accompanied by his wife Marie, a Cape Horn skipper, proud of her husband’s 'hero', 'beautiful and legendary figure of one of the most famous Cape Horn captains, magnificent leader, a man of nerve as well as heart' according to Georges Aubin.
