The Pain of Marguerite Duras describes the endless wait for the return of Robert L., deported to Dachau. Pain is a testimony. That of war, seen from the “rear,” as they say, that of a woman waiting for her husband without knowing whether he is dead or alive. It is “the wait of all women,” Duras will say.
