In Saumurois, the royal abbey of Fontevraud was governed for nearly seven centuries by women of character, at the head of one of the largest monastic complexes in France. Transformed into a prison after the French Revolution, it thus escapes certain ruin. Having become a Cultural Meeting Center in the 1970s, the abbey is today one of the jewels of the Loire Valley, a cultural landscape listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
